Snips and Snails and Puppy dog Tails

"If you are not willing to learn, no one can help you. If you are determined to learn, no one can stop you." -Unknown

Well, our Isaac is growing up to being a boy, not a baby anymore. He is certainly a determined one. In the last month he has surprised us in so many ways. He is growing in leaps and bounds. I can remember the first time Tim and I listened to Isaac's heart beat when he was still inside my belly. It was quick and strong, making us think we might be having a girl, yet it made the rest of the world around us slow down.

Dear: Isaac

As you grow, you'll have opportunities to listen too. And, you'll learn from, and help those around you. I hope you take time to really be there when your siblings or friends need someone to talk to. Sometimes they'll just want a listening ear and a shoulder to lean on, and that's when you have the chance to hear more than just the words they are saying.

Life is an adventure. You have turned mundane moments into pure magic. The wonder of a child is simply the best. I now know why they say that little boys are made of snips and snails and puppy dog tails. Your life's adventure does not have to go as planned or be perfect to be wonderful. Sometimes the unexpected, bumpy road leads to the memories most treasured.

Love: Mom

The Hurried Life

Sometimes the slowest way is the fastest way to joy (from Ann Voskamp, aholyexperience.com)

Today, our neighbor’s clothesline is hung with a long row of clean wash flapping in the breeze. It must be bed sheet day because the line the length of the large lawn is lined with crisp white linens and I reflect on how a load of laundry can change from one phase of life to another. In days left behind, hers would have included her husband's clothing, work pants, shirts and socks. His presence on the clothesline is missing now as he has passed away. But life and laundry must go on. Our own clothesline has changed in the past year as well with the addition of baby items, diapers, onesies and PJs. The amount of laundry we do in this house now has increased exponentially.

I recall driving through the Mennonite countryside and admiring the long washlines that extend far beyond twice the size of ours. The clothing neatly pinned almost categorically. You can see the generations that must live life out in their home based on the clothes on their line. There is something quite idyllic about it. The homes are surrounded by rural trademarks, a well manicured vegetable garden, a sign that reads "Slow Down, Children at Play," the farmers working the land, the century cedar fencelines. The Mennonite lifestyle is something to be admired. There is immense wisdom in going through life in the slow lane.

It is believed that the typical  Mennonite farmer produces a greater harvest while consuming less energy than his non-Mennonite neighbours. The Mennonite lifestyle has been centered upon agriculture for centuries. Furthermore, life on the Mennonite farm coincides with faith and religious traditions. To the Mennonite, going at a slower pace, toiling with the soil, raising livestock, and growing their own food is seen as following God's will. Communing with nature is communing with God. To the Mennonite, farming is not merely a job but a sacred lifestyle dictated by the Scriptures. The rigours of farming has traditionally been seen as a way of ingraining these important values within the community.

If we stop living like life is an emergency and embrace the small gifts each day, we may find that time slows down. Nowhere in God's word does it say to live a hurried life. So many people today, myself included, get caught up in the desire to want more and not be content in the moment. For the moment, look at what you have and be thankful. Saying with assurance that you are happy with what you have here and now is a wise way to spend your time. Or, look at the grunge of everyday life and accept it for what it is: life. No life is perfect.

Yes, time flies. I find it does even more so now that I'm a mom. But, life is not about getting it all right. Life is messy, dizzy, burdensome, deadline-full, and can make you soul-weary. We are not fully equipped to handle what life brings us sometimes. Give in to it, receive it, and accept it with grace for the Joy of Christ you are. And, give in to Jesus, who offers peace. Peace that surpasses all understanding (Philippians 4:7).

And, sometimes the slowest way is the fastest way to JOY (from Ann Voskamp, aholyexperience.com)

Sonya

Gifts

60. New socks

61. Well worn comfy jeans

62. Pumpkin pie latte (o how I've missed you)

63. Things that are cleverly and intentionally packaged. I was pleasantly surprised when I opened my extra large box of Orange Pekoe Tea, that the bags are wrapped in packages of 20 or so tea bags. Now, some of you may say this is wasteful. But, I think it is quite the happy medium. Wasteful would be individually packaged. Because, tea loses some of it's aroma and flavour when exposed to the air out there it must be kept sealed to stay fresh. If you are an avid tea drinker, you know this. It would not stay fresh if it was kept loose in the cardboard box. So, for this packaging, I am grateful.

64. Souvenirs. Snowglobes, rocks and shells from provinces away were just given to Isaac from his Grandma and Grandpa Cook.

65. Warm apple crisp with vanilla ice cream.

66. A new box of crayons. They're just nostalgic for me.

67. "Love You Forever" by Robert Munsch. Reading it together with my husband for Isaac before bed, we both found ourselves welling up with tears.

68. Jesus told us “in this world, you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” John 16:33. Jesus is our peace, hope, strength and rest from all that clamours in this world.

69. “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28

70. Waking up and realizing it's not Monday, but Sunday. Wow, I was disoriented on Sunday morning thinking it was Monday and I had to get ready for work. But, oh how thankful I was when I realized it was Sunday, and I could lay in bed just a little bit longer.

71. The smell of a wood burning fire.

72. A free concert - The Trews at Pumpkinfest in Port Elgin this past weekend.

73. Going to a pumpkin patch and each picking our own pumpkin.

74. Awesome = Apple picking. Awkward = Realizing that the Honey Crisp ones on sale that you wanted were not available for picking. 10 lbs were on sale for $19. So, I start filling up my reusable bag from the pre-picked bin. Then, I realize, I don't know how much will make 10 lbs. So, I ask if there are already filled 10 lb bags somewhere. They proceed to show me the pre-filled bags right in front of my nose. It gets better. So, I proceed to empty my reusable bag. And, the salesperson promptly yells at me "No no, let me do it for you, gently." Apparently apples are to be handled like eggs. Haha. Oh well, it makes for a funny story.

75. The smell of Fall.

76. Child free grocery shopping.

77. Tea parties with real loose leaf tea, real scones, real homemade jam, and real china.

78. Baked Alaska. White cake is topped with ice cream and meringue, then quickly baked in a hot oven for this delightful dessert.

79. Getting a hair cut.

In the meantime, in between time, God bless and keep you!

In Him,
Sonya

Let Love Win

This mama's heart is heavy today.
I hold my son close and breath in that exquisite baby scent.
I think, this is a gift from Heaven.
My child.
This innocence, when does it get lost?
I look at what I have around me and wonder how could I want more?
My heart breaks knowing that in Ancaster
a little girl is missing her daddy
and doesn't understand why she can't see him again.
I wonder how did something so innocent as posting an add on Kijiji
turn into something so hateful?
There seems to be those in this world
who have no good in them at all.
But, we were all Heaven's child once.
Our mama's all thought how can this child be born into sin?
They all tried to keep you
wrapped in love.
It's in times of crisis and great need that we turn to God.
And maybe ask
God, where were you
Why would you let this happen
Many would conclude that God is not there
or that He is not all powerful,
or that He doesn't really care about people suffering.
But, He has a plan and a purpose
that is mysterious,
not always evident.
God will overcome
In the meantime
We need to not sit idly.
We need to get off our couches, our phones, and our to-do's.
We need to keep our children wrapped in love
We need to let all things work together for good (Romans 8)
Joseph said to his brothers: "You intended it for evil, but I intended it for good."
There are times when it's alright to lose faith.
Christ promised us hard times.
We need to blanket those who are crying
by poverty,
violence,
worldy pressures,
oppression,
wars,
marginalization
...
with LOVE
We need to let LOVE in
We need to Let LOVE WIN
Heavenly Father
...

We bring all our hurts, our doubts, our guilt to You and lay them at Your altar, eagerly awaiting the day when You will bring healing.

We trust You to love the Bosma families well. Strengthen them to press on in You.
You are the light of our lives.

Please make Your presence known to them in the coming days, weeks, months, and years. Fill them with the peace that defies worry. May they learn to walk in full confidence of what You have planned for their lives and rest in that as the only truth.

AMEN

The Power of 'Amen'

The word Amen, 'so be it,' is the adopted word by Christians for the conclusion of prayers or songs in worship. It's use goes back through the earliest Biblical and Judaism texts. The word in Hebrew means truth. In the Bible when it says "the God of truth" (Isaiah 65:16) in Hebrew it would be "the God of Amen." Jesus used Amen to put emphasis to His own words. There is something about the power of Amen.

Sometimes I lose focus while I'm praying. My mind wanders from lifting up a friend in prayer to the undone laundry or to tomorrow's agenda. I can be praying thanksgiving for my many gifts and suddenly start imagining how nice it would be to have more. Other times, I drift off to sleep mid-prayer and wake to a new day wondering "Did I say Amen?" "Did that prayer count if I started it but never finished it?" The battlefield of the mind is that we can be easily distracted. Perhaps moreso now that we are bombarded with technology and the culture of multi-tasking is promoted. Throughout the day I talk to God. But, is their more power in a prayer that is started and finished in one sitting? Is their communion, oneness with God, when the only time you talk to Him is while trying to get your baby to sleep, while tilling the soil, while cleaning the windows, even while driving?

Friends. Does it make a difference if we pray or not? Is a prayer unfinished if you did not say Amen. Does prayer bring healing? Can God use our prayers to bring change?

I asked God these questions when I felt that my prayers were more about quantity than quality. I pray, and I pray often. But, sometimes, I find that I am uttering the same old prayers. I was relying on Him knowing the condition of my heart without offering an uninterrupted time of prayer. And He revealed to me "Your prayers are powerful." He wants a relationship, and you need to retreat from your to-do list for a relationship to work. That revelation, He showed me through a few verses of scripture as well as through some answered prayers.

I have been struggling lately with sleep. Not hard to imagine when you have little one who wakes up once, twice, or seven times a night. I've never been a great sleeper and I have never been a napper. I can be tired, overtired even, and it will take at least an hour for sleep to come. So, when the wee one wakes up, I don't just fall back to sleep. It takes some time. To top it off, I have a farmer husband who is up every day at 5:30. So, I'm woken once again. Just as I fall back to sleep around 6:30 or 7:00, the wee one will wake up for the day. So, I prayed over this situation. Rather than asking God for His blessing over my rest and rejuvenation while I go about my day. I prayed by setting aside time to pray. I set up a peace retreat, a corner of my home where I will commune with God and meditate on His Living Word. I also had friends to pray over this for me. One friend prayed over the phone with me. Another, friend, who I know journals her prayers, said she was praying for healing for me. I thought to myself, I didn't know that I needed healing. I know now that I needed healing in the sense that a wandering mind was my burden and I needed to lay my burdens down. The sleep deprivation has been getting much better. Isaac, for the most part sleeps better now. And, my mind slows down enough that it doesn't take me as long to fall back to sleep. On top of praying, I have been steering clear of known stimulaters past a certain time - any kind of screen time, caffeine, exercise. Now, I still love me a 'cuppa joe' in the mornings. And, it is not every night that I get a good night's sleep. But, I do feel more energized during the day. On the days where I know I am lacking in sleep, I pray first thing a prayer for energy.

Another answered prayer has been for healing for my back pain/strain. Having a baby does a number on your spine. And, carrying a baby around everywhere does it too. It did not matter whether I was sitting, standing, or laying down - it felt as though my lower back was shot. It was affecting the way I cared for my child. I sometimes did not want to pick him up and I hated denying him what I knew he needed - to be held. I tried numerous methods to relieve the pain, massage therapy, a back brace, topical creams, physiotherapy. We even bought a new bed. I was avoiding seeing a Chiropractor, but still might try that. Then, I decided to pray about it. And, I realized that before, I was trying to take the matter into my own hands. God revealed to me that there is no matter too trivial for God. I was not praying about it because I thought I could fix it by myself. Once I prayed about it, it was obvious that the back pain was a matter for God. It was something He cared about. I then realized that I could pray for healing, but I also needed to be open to receiving it. Only once I was open to receiving it, could I feel the pain start to fade. I still have pain, but it is slowly getting better. I need to be open to complete and total healing from Him. We often say: "Nothing is too big for God to handle." But, the opposite is true too, "Nothing is too small." He cares for even the piddliest of our troubles. And, friends, as the gardening season is approaching, the back pain is going to be in my prayers often. I must have my back back.

Of course, we don't always get the answer we hope for in prayer and there are some prayers that I have been saying for years only to hear Him say "wait." I have prayed for courage to speak openly about my faith to others, and I have prayed for family members who do not know the Lord. Sometimes it seems our prayers go unanswered but they are not unheard. God's will and plan for us might not look like our own. He will release His strength over situations that we pray for in His time. It may seem He makes us pray for some things over and over. When we pray over and over, are open to the Spirit, and are open to being amazed at what power is released, we can bring change by prayer.

So, friends, take it to the Lord in prayer. Take your burdens, thanksgivings, grievances, praises, struggles, and strifes. Lay them at His feet and be open to what He can do through you! And remember the Power of the word "Amen."

God's love is meteoric,
His loyalty astronomic,
His purpose titanic,
His verdicts oceanic.
Yet in his largeness
Nothing gets lost;
Not a man, not a mouse,
Slips through the cracks.
Psalms 36:5-6 Message Bible

1000 Gifts Dare - Thanksgivings -

35. Birdhouses - I have three birdhouses outside and there are finally signs of Spring inside. One of these birdhouses is a beautiful one made from recycled barnboard and made by my husband's own hands. For the creativity behind that birdhouse I will always be thankful too.

36.The song of the Red Winged Black Bird. I've so enjoyed waking up to the sound of birds in the mornings again. Another sign that Springeth hath Sprungeth.

37. Sometimes I unravel, get frazzled, come undone. I lay all my grievances down on my poor husband. I clean like a mad woman when I feel like I need more order. My husband, in turn, says: "Why don't I take Isaac for you so you can have a break?" Or, simply listens to my unwinding while taking on a housework task, like unloading the dishwasher or making lunch.

38. The stillness of the night when Isaac goes down (I hope for the night). This is the time when I can talk to God and say a prayer that ends with 'Amen.' I lay him down in his crib and sometimes just sit in the rocker in his room so I can be with God. I pray for rest and rejuvenation for the new day, for security over the night, for the Spirit to hover over our home and for the foundation of our home to be built on God. Jesus be the Center. I say my thanksgivings. I pray for my loved ones and the condition of their hearts. My prayer is not complete without an 'Amen.' And then I can do some picking up from the day.

39. Our pastor. This past Sunday was his last in our church. He has been an incredible blessing to our church family for about 13 years. And, I can't help but think, we will come to the realization of all that he and his family did when he is gone.

40. The laundry on the line. I love the fresh scent of laundry hung on the line. So long as the farmers are not spreading manure at the same time. I am also loving how cute the laundry on the line looks now that there are so many little clothes and cloth diapers hanging on it.

41. Being a mom has opened doors to new relationships. It is very interesting how at first your conversations revolve around your littles and your get-togethers consist of play-dates at parks, pools, or community centers. But, genuine relationships form and the reasons for getting together are not just for your littles to interact but for you to socialize too. I am glad to call some of the new mothers I have met, friends.

42. Stuffies - Isaac was the recipient of a lot and I mean a lot of stuffed animals. Then my dad came over with a garbage bag full of stuffies that were ours when we were kids. I decided to freshen them up by giving them a wash and spreading them out on the floor to air dry them. While they were airing out, I couldn't resist putting Isaac in the middle of them all and taking a sweet picture.

43. The very busy mama and papa finches feeding their newly hatched babies in my potted boxwood tree. They love their babies so much. The male has some red colouring and is quite the singer. I feel a little like Snow White when I'm cleaning my kitchen. The female is brown.

44. Beautiful lilac blooms and their exquisite fragrance.

45. Freshly mown grass.

46. My hubby's frugal ways. Because he is a mender and fixer of broken things. We can save a buck by not buying new things. Hence my shabby chic decor.

47. Forsythia - I love the vibrant yellow blooms I see popping up all over the country side. Their beauty is fleeting. Every year, for many years, I say I need to dig up some from someone for my yard. Perhaps I should finally do this this year.

Gratitude turns what we have into enough.

Loads of diapers! And the smell of freshly mown grass.

Homemade goodness

May the 4th be with you!

The waking up from a nap sequence - He loves to pull down his mobile.

Standing in the need of prayer

We use them all the time. Those three words - "How are you?"

But rarely are we asking how are you really feeling? How is your soul today?

How often do we get asked "How are you?" in one day?
And how often do we give the generic "I'm good. And you?" response? Because, if people only knew what was going on behind our words, maybe they would stop asking "How are you?"

I want to be honest here. Because, I want those who read this blog not to see me as a person with it all together. Trust me, I do not have it all together. I have a lot to figure out. I am a person who is wounded and broken, and not willing to wait on God's will most of the time, and I put on the apathetic smile all the time, and I am impatient, and I get out of sorts when there is not order, I say words that cut and blame it on hormones when I have only myself to blame, I compare myself to others, and my sin-bio is desperately long. And, I need God like I need bread because His grace is sufficient to heal these ailments.

So, I've started to really listen to people when I ask them "How are you?" I listen not just for their voice, but for God's voice underneath their voice. Even if they respond with the generic "Good. And you?" I want to be a soul friend and know the condition of their heart. And, I want you to do the same for me. So, when I ask "How are you?" I am listening to you with an ear towards you and with the other ear towards Heaven. And, if you really are doing good, I will know. But, if you need prayer, the Spirit will intercede and tell me what it is that needs prayed for. And, I will do my best to pray for your brokenness too. And, if you do tell me your struggles and challenges, that's the Spirit telling you that I will listen, that I will not interrupt, and I will not judge. That's the Spirit telling you that your words are safe with me. You can open up.

I will
just
listen.

You see, God never asks us to be strong. Which I love - but this culture does not. In this culture you have to look strong and not show emotion.

Actually, God says the opposite often. He says it is better to be meek and mild and show weakness. For, He says His power is made perfect in weakness. Therefore we should boast our weaknesses and not our strengths (2 Corinthians 12:9).

Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and His understanding no one can fathom. He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. ~ Isaiah 40:28-31

When we feel like we don't have it together, when we are tired of waiting. When we feel downtrodden and broken, and know we are not perfect, God wants to see our real face, not our apathetic face. He would rather us not worship Him at all than be apathetic in our worship. He would rather us be angry with Him than put on a facade. And, I'm glad God understands when we are angry with Him, or whomever. I'm glad that anger and worship are not distinct and separate things. If you are pretending to enjoy God or even love Him, he knows. You can't fool Him, you can't even try. He is someone you can be real with. He knows your prayers before you say them, He knows your prayers even when you do not. I am thankful that He is someone you can be real with. So, I'm praying that God will use me to be a soul friend and show me what you stand in need of so that I may intercede in prayer for you. And, I'm asking God to make me fully present when you answer that question: "How are you?" And, I pray you'll do so too.

Questions for reflection:

Why is it sometimes difficult to be 'real' in each of our daily interactions?

How will God meet you in some of the people you interact with? How might others meet God in their interactions with you?

As the old hymn says: "Not my brother or my sister, but it's me O Lord. Standing in the need of prayer." Reflect on what you stand in need of. How might you bring these needs up when asked "How are you?"?

The One Thousand Gifts Dare - What's been making me terribly happy lately:

23. Hot oatmeal to stick to your ribs and warm your core on a howling-wind morning.
24. Celebrating four incredible years as husband and wife.
25. Making baby food. Isaac is starting on solids. So far I've made and frozen some pureed sweet potato, butternut squash, acorn squash, pear, avocado, and chicken mixed with sweet potato. And, so far he's tried the squash and nibbled (gummed) on some al dente finger carrots and apple. Apparently he will eat whatever we put in front of him. It is too funny to watch him explore new tastes and textures.
26. Big belly laughs from Isaac when he hears me say "ha ha ha CHOO." or "peek peek peek HABOO."
27. Tiny fingers that have the strongest hold. I will never get tired of the automatic grip reflex that babies have. Can I somehow teach him not to let his clinging fingers fade away?
28. Women of faith and studying 12 Women of The Bible, plus partaking in coffee with these women. Each woman in our Bible study offers insights and perspectives that feed my mind and spirit. Plus there is always goodies to feed the body too.
29. PB and J. I shared a children's message at church recently about how you can't make the sandwich without the bread. Just like we can't live without Jesus in our lives. And Jesus called Himself the Bread of Life. Now, whenever I make a PB and J sandwich in this time of lent, it reminds me that Jesus is the bread of life. His love is enough.
30. This cute recipe for Chocolate Egg Nest Cookies.
31. My Heavenly Father and His Son, my Saviour. Praise His name forever!
32. Old camp tunes. Back in the good ole days when I worked at summer camp we sang songs like "Little is Much (When He Lives in Your Heart)" and "I Want to Walk Like Jesus." I've been looking for new songs to sing with Isaac as the grown up in me grows tired of some of the same old tunes all the time. And, I've been reacquainted with some great ones from my camp days.
33. Back rolls, knee rolls, elbow rolls. My little guy, Isaac, has rolls on his rolls. I love his baby chub.
34. This picture makes me smile every time.

Just a wee bit Irish! (His shirt says "Little Shamrocker" ~ How cute is that?)

What's been making me terribly happy lately

Life lately ...

I've been meaning to make a gratitude journal for the longest time. I've been inspired to by the book "One Thousand Gifts: A Dare to Live Fully Right Where You Are" by Ann Voskamp. Through this book, Ann, tells her personal, heart wrenching story whilst writing about what she is most grateful for. She writes that in order to receive God's blessings we need to give thanksgiving first. I visit her blog A Holy Experience almost daily and am blessed every time.

"I only deepen the wound of the world when I neglect to give thanks for early light dappled through leaves and the heavy perfume of wild roses in early July and the song of crickets on a humid night and the rivers that run and the stars that rise and the rain that falls and all the good things that a good God gives."

"It takes a full twenty minutes after your stomach is full to register satiation. How long does it take your soul to realize that your life is full? The slower the living, the greater the sense of fullness and satisfaction."

In the book, she encourages you to take a joy dare by being thankful in every circumstance and finding joy in the little things.

"It's habits that can imprison you and it's habits that can free you. But when thanks to God becomes a habit - so joy in God becomes your life." ~ Ann Voskamp

So, I'm going in. I'm going to begin to keep a gratitude list. Take the joy dare with me!

Here is what's been making me terribly happy lately:

1. The miniature Christmas nativity which I forgot to take down. When I see it I reflect on the amazing gift of God's Son to the world.

2. Flowers from my husband. And, when I asked him why he got me flowers, he says: "Can't a man get flowers for his wife with no reason?"

3. Fire engine socks. They are absolutely adorable and underneath those socks are the sweetest little piggies I've ever seen.

4. Pumpkin snack cake. A new recipe! Enjoyed baking and eating this one.

5. Scrabble game pieces make the best reminders. I love the "PRAY" reminder on my hutch. Sadly, I need the reminder often.

6. Bundling up in warm sweaters on cold days.

7. A snack of clementines and pistachios... leading to a clementine throwing match with my husband.

8. A package in the mail from Korea with tasty (and not so tasty) treats.

9. Hanging out with the ladies in Coffee Break and watching the beautiful movie "October Baby." The movie tells the story of a woman who is the survivor of a failed abortion. I came across this website after watching the movie and was amazed by the video testimonies. Please visit: Every Life Is Beautiful!

10. Snow tubing with the youth in our church. I only went down the hill 3 times as Isaac was keeping warm in the clubhouse with a friend. Thanks Kelly! It made me realize I'm getting older as I nearly peed my pants. It was really fun though!

11. Choo Choo trains - they're just plain cute.

12. Building a collection of children's books for my wee one and reading them to him.

13. Isaac's smiles in the morning when he wakes up and sees me. I've become more of a morning person just knowing that I'll get to see that beautiful fresh face. He doesn't wake up in the morning with an agenda like we do as adults. He's just simply happy that it's a new day.

14. Bubble bath suds. Even dish soap suds for that matter. Have you ever really looked closely at a bubble? They are quite lovely. They're translucent yet seem to have thousands of colours going on at once. What a divinely beautiful detail God made for us to enjoy!

15. French toast, raspberries, icing sugar, and (real) maple syrup. Okay, not the healthiest breakfast, but delish!

16. Onesies - you can't have too many of them!

17. Softly falling snow - the combination of no wind and big snowflakes and how it leaves a gorgeous dusting of snow on the branches of trees. I couldn't resist bundling Isaac up to go outside in the carrier to let him see snow falling from that perspective. The resulting picture still makes me chuckle - as he appears to show signs of Seasonal Affective Disorder.

18. New shoes at a good price!

19. Good reads! Crazy Love by Francis Chan. Did you know that a caterpillar has over 220 distinct and separate muscles in it's head alone? That an Elm tree can have more than 6 million leaves on it? That's detail in design! We have a God who designed the beauty of this world, a world so big we can't even fathom it, and on top of it all He is relentlessly in love with you and me.

20. Laundry! Though, I do not love folding it. I must be thankful because I have running water, hot water, hydro, more clothing, towels, blankets... than I need, hands to fold with, the ability to work. God is good to me!

21.  Homemade Valentines. A new loose leaf tea I've found and am in love with, "A Monk's Blend" - I've decided to give a tea sampling out to friends for Valentines Day.

22. Hosting and partaking in a progressive dinner with good friends, new friends, delicious food, and a red and white theme. I enjoyed making the desserts: A trifle and chocolate covered strawberries.

.....

In naming these gifts I have found that this in itself is a gift! I look at some of these things and they might be quite ordinary things. But, now that I have named them, it somehow gives them more meaning. Of course there are days when you can't think of one thing to be grateful for. That's okay too! We forget and we take things for granted. We stumble and we fall. God understands this. But, it's so good to reflect on what is good in this world and on what is beautiful in the midst of the ugly

"If you think of this world as a place intended simply for our happiness, you find it quite intolerable: think of it as a place of training and correction and it's not so bad. It might even be good."
